JERUSALEM Ian Thomas Jersey , March 10 (Xinhua) -- Israeli authorities denied residency and expelled the family of a Palestinian assailant from east Jerusalem to the West Bank, the Israeli police said on Thursday.
The 21-year-old Fouad Abu Rajab Tamimi shot and seriously wounded two policemen in an east Jerusalem shooting attack earlier this week. Tamimi was shot and killed in a fire exchange with Israeli police forces.
Israel's Public Security minister Gilad Erdan instructed the police to check the legal status of Tamimi's family, residing in the east Jerusalem Palestinian village of Isawiya, police spokeswoman Luba Samri said in a statement on Thursday evening.
"The police inquiry showed that the terrorist's family filed a motion for family reunification, however this motion had not yet been approved," a statement by the police read.
"Therefore the terrorist's father, his mother and his sisters are not residents, making their stay in Isawiya illegal," Samri said, adding the family members were expelled to the West Bank territories.
Israel occupied the West Bank, east Jerusalem and Gaza Strip territories in the 1967 Middle East War. The state annexed the Palestinian territories in east Jerusalem in 1981, in a move not recognized by the international community. There are 300,000 Palestinians living in this area with residency permits.
An Israeli law allows authorities to avoid granting Israeli citizenship or residency status to Palestinians married to Israelis.
